Get up close and personal with mother nature this summer when you head to the great outdoors to camp or hike. Camping and hiking are treasured summer activities, but before you venture off into the woods, make a few preparations beforehand.

While camping and hiking are great ways to get outside and spend time with family these activities are often accompanied by several less pleasant aspects of nature: bug bites, sunburns, aching joints, and poisonous plants. But don’t worry, Zia Zensations has you covered.

Here are three essential oils to pack before hitting the trail.

Peppermint Oil
Peppermint essential oil will be your best friend when on a hot, difficult trail. Peppermint can help cool you off, help keep your energy levels high, and soothe aches and pains.

You can rub peppermint oil on aching muscles if you start to feel pain while hiking or camping. You can also put it in a spray bottle with a carrier oil and spray it on the back of your neck when the sun gets harsh. Hikers in need of an energy boost can also rub some peppermint oil on their hands and inhale the aroma (just make sure to not touch your eyes, if you do, rinse them with a nut, seed or vegetable oil, and flush with water).

Tea Tree Oil
The same soothing agents in Tea Tree essential oil that help you rest easy can also help soothe the irritated skin that often accompanies hiking. Tea tree oil makes an ideal natural hand sanitizer when hiking and camping as well, along with inflamed skin due to bug bites or irritating plants. Tea tree oil may help keep pesky insects away, and let you continue your hike in comfort.

Tea Tree Oil can be used directly on your skin, but if you want your supply to last longer you might consider mixing it with just a little bit of coconut oil. This will help you spread the oil nice and evenly over an affected area.

 Antiseptic for minor cuts and scrapes

To disinfect a cut or scrape, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the cut thoroughly with plain soap and water.
  2. Mix one drop of tea tree oil with one teaspoon of coconut oil.
  3. Apply a small amount of the mixture to the injury and cover with a bandage.
  4. Repeat this process once or twice daily until a scab has formed.
