How To Use Essential Oils Throughout The Home

This is an interesting article that showcases more great ways to use your ZIA Zensations Oils.

Essential oils may be great for aromatherapy, but can they really be used to help clean your home? In fact, lemon, tea tree, rosemary, lavender, and peppermint essential oils are all naturally antibacterial, whereas many more, like orange, pine, and eucalyptus, are often major ingredients in less-natural cleaning products. For me, the initial purchase of a bunch of essential oils was absolutely worth it; only a few drops are ever used at once, and they have plenty of uses around the home. Here are just a few of the ways you can clean and freshen your house with them.

Create Your Own, Cheaper Air Freshener

  • This is an obvious one, but it’s very useful. Pick your favorite scent and put it in a spray bottle with some distilled water. Spray as necessary. I like to spray a lavender freshener on linens.

Repel Pests

  • Put a drop of oil on a cotton ball, and scatter a bunch of these around your kitchen. Peppermint oil repels mice and spiders, while lavender, citronella, lemongrass, and rosemary oils repel flying insects.

Freshen Clothes

  • Either put a nice scent, like lavender oil, on cotton balls and put them in your dresser, or create a sachet out of rice, a few drops of oil, and spare cloth.
  • You can also put a few drops of your favorite oils onto a damp cloth and throw it in the dryer as an alternative to scented dryer sheets.

Take Deep Breaths

  • Eucalyptus oil in the shower, in your humidifier, or just in a pan of simmering water on the stove can help you breathe easier.

Kill or Prevent Mold

  • Mix tea tree oil and water and spray onto the affected area to get rid of mold and mildew. Let it sit and then wipe it away.

Deodorize Trashcans

  • Mix hot, soapy water with some eucalyptus oil and swirl it in the bottom of your trash can if it needs a freshened smell.

Repel Foot Odors

  • Use basil or lavender oil in your shoes. I like to put a cotton ball with basil oil on it in my shoe caddy.

Make Your Dishes Sparkle

  • Put a few drops of lemon oil into your dishwasher before running it.

Create a Dry Wash

  • If you have non-leather upholstery, you can freshen it with oils combined with baking soda. Dust it on and then vacuum it off. Lemon, peppermint, lavender, and ylang-ylang oils work best.
  • Combine baking soda with the powerful germicide eucalyptus to destroy dust mites on your mattress or your child’s stuffed animals.

Repel Pet Odors

  • Mop up strong pet odors with hot water, a cleanser, and either lemongrass or geranium oils.

Keep the Toilet Fresh

  • Add drops of tea tree oil to your toilet tank so every time someone flushes, it fills the bathroom with a nice scent. It also cleans the inside of the toilet.

Get Gum Off

  • Lemon and orange oils can get rid of many different sticky materials. (Launder immediately after using it on clothing to avoid stains.)

Clean Wooden Cutting Boards

  • Use the powerful thyme essential oil to destroy germs.

And there are plenty more ideas out there! I have to admit that whenever I see a new cleaning tip that includes essential oils, I get a little excited. They can make your house smell great in no time!

My first experience with CBD

My name is Derick Morris and I wanted to tell you my personal experiences on what led me to cbd and how it has changed my entire life.
This is not just my story nor my journey, me and my incredible wife Ana Morris started exploring cbd options three years ago. We had adopted a dog and his name is cob. Cob is a French bulldog and we did not know when we first got him that he has had extensive back problems his entire life. We started noticing flares in cobs back and he would walk funny or would limp in pain until one day he was totally immobilized. It was very scary for us but cob was happy and showed no sign of pain. We would have to literally carry him outside to the bathroom and hand feed him. Enough was enough we went to the vet right away when he was getting worse not better. After countless hours and dollars the only option the vets had given us was surgery which was only a
50/50 chance of him walking again. That was not good enough for us there had to be another option. We started exploring natural alternatives because we did not want Cobb over medicated either we just wanted our dog back. After many hours of self education and research I decided the best choice for our family was cbd. We were very skeptical at first after all we are consumers also, with that being said we purchased cbd and at that moment it would change my entire life without even knowing it but that is a story for another time. When we started giving cbd to Cobb he could not move his back legs at all he would crawl across the ground with his front legs it was so hard for us to witness but he always had his spirit and was always full of joy. The Miracle started to happen after just a couple days of giving Cobb cbd he was up and going again you could still see he was in a little discomfort so we gave him a larger dose of cbd. He was running up and down stairs playing again within the week we were amazed and in shock on
how effective that it was. Cobb has not had a flair in over a year with daily cbd use we of course take caution but cbd brought my best friend back. We currently give cbd to all of our animals we have three rescue dogs and a rescue cat which all benefit from cbd use we use it for anxiousness, anxiety, inflammation, tremors, pain and so much more if you love your animals as much as we do it is definitely worth a try we hope you have a beautiful day thank you for reading our story.

Why ZIA CBD?

We do what you would do.

At ZIA we care about quality. So before we sell a product, we need to know exactly what’s in it. My name is Joe Zia and when I first started looking for reputable CBD suppliers, I found dozens of wholesale “distributors” ranting about quality and purity. In an unregulated market where there could be just about anything in those expensive little bottles, I had to dig deeper. Over the next six months I studied diligently about CBD and what constitutes a quality product. I found out there are many active ingredients (cannabinoids) in the hemp plant, that work to effect change on our bodies. I learned there are many strains that are bred differently to have higher concentrations of these beneficial compounds. It was clear that farming practices and extraction techniques were key to a premium end product.
Once I finally found a reputable company, I flew out to Oregon to examine there operation. I was greeted by skilled farmers with thousands of beautiful 100% organic plants and super critical Co2 extraction all on the same property. This is the same CBD we sell and use personally.

CBD Vs Medical Marijuana – Which works best

Medical marijuana or CBD – Just like many others, I too have been overwhelmed by the myriad of information that has recently flooded the media about marijuana and its therapeutic benefits. Let’s start by clarifying the two main categories of therapeutic marijuana:

  • Marijuana or medical marijuana
  • CBD (Cannabidiol)

Here we’ll look at the benefits and side effects of both and help you decide if either are a good fit for you or your loved ones.

We have been selling CBD (Cannabidiol) for some time now and given the personal relationship we have with many of our customers, we have dozens of anecdotes of effective treatment from them. The benefits we’ve witnessed of CBD products is undeniable. Here in Utah we just finished the 2018 midterm elections and medical marijuana was overwhelmingly approved.  Now that medical marijuana is becoming available many customers ask: Why use CBD when I can just use medical marijuana?

Hemp, Cannabis and Marijuana

The marijuana plant, also known as cannabis and hemp, has approximately 400 different chemical components, of which there are about 80 which are known as cannabinoids.  Within these cannabinoids there are several compounds that work separately and in concert to effect change to our system.  While  many have benefits, the two most important are CBD and THC.  As if that weren’t complicated enough there is hemp seed oil, which is an amazing carrier oil that we at ZIA love to use to dilute our essential oils.  Hemp seed oil does not contain any THC or other cannabinoids such as CBD.  Beware of companies that interchange the terms hemp oil, hemp seed oil and CBD oil.  Many of these companies market hemp products with limited or zero percent of therapeutic cannabinoids.

What is CBD?

CBD is relatively new and less is known about its benefits.  Many people think that CBD is just a part that has been extracted from the marijuana plant and thereby isn’t as potent.  CBD and THC are very similar compounds but each have very different effects on our bodies.  First and foremost THC is a psychotropic substance that makes its users get high.  CBD does not make its users get high or contain psychotropic compounds.

Where does CBD come from?

CBD comes from a variation of the marijuana plant that is specifically bred to produce CBD.  The plant is cut before it completely matures.  The flower will typically produce a crystalline substance on top of the flower, when that turns yellow in color that is a sign that the plant is producing THC.  Plants that are bred for CBD are cut before the THC production.  CBD Oil comes from an extraction process that can be carried out by different methods.  The preferred method is super critical CO2 extraction which leaves no additional residues.  Currently there are two types of CBD products:

  • Full Spectrum – This contains the all of the cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant and can contain up to .3% THC.  This can appear in some drug tests.
  • Isolate – Here you only get the CBD compound without any of the other cannabinoids.  This contains 0% THC and is preferred for people under going drug testing.

There is plenty of clinical evidence highlighting the benefits of CBD oil.  (Click here to open clinical data about the use of CBD,  Here are some of the common ailments where CBD appears beneficial

  • seizures
  • substance abuse and dependance
  • inflammation
  • pain, fibromyalgia
  • psychosis or mental disorders, PTSD, depression
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • nausea
  • epilepsy
  • migraines
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • sleep disorders
  • Parkinson

What is Medical Marijuana?

Medical marijuana is identical to recreational marijuana.  The only difference is that it is being administered as a remedy to a health condition.  The use of marijuana for its medicinal benefits has been documented as far back as 2700 BC. There are thousands of clinical studies showcasing the pros and cons of marijuana (Click here to open clinical data about the use of marijuana and CBD on epilepsy).

  • pain
  • muscle spasticity
  • glaucoma
  • insomnia
  • low appetite
  • nausea
  • anxiety

Side effects

CBD is well tolerated, even in large doses. Research suggests any side effects that do occur with CBD use are likely the result of drug-to-drug interactions between CBD and other medications you may be taking.

THC causes temporary side effects, such as:An external file that holds a picture, illustration, etc. Object name is dhps-10-045Fig3.jpg

  • heart rate variations
  • coordination issues
  • dry mouth
  • red eyes
  • slower reaction times
  • memory loss
  • infertility

These side effects are part of the compound’s psychoactive properties.

Neither compound is fatal. However, high THC use may be connected to long-term negative psychiatric effects. This is especially true for adolescents who consume large amounts of THC. Use of the compound increases the risk for some psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia.

How marijuana effects the body

There is plenty of scientific evidence demonstrating how marijuana effects our bodies.  Hang with me because here it becomes a little dense.  The following is a graphic showing how THC and CBD interacts with our bodies and the locations of the CB1 and CB2 receptors.  This is an excerpt from a great article in pubmed:

“The endocannabinoid system and CB1/CB2 distribution. (A) The mechanism of action of the endocannabinoid system is depicted, with human endocannabinoids AEA or 2-AG binding to CB1 to initiate a signaling cascade through the release of neurotransmitters. THC is also able to bind to CB1, exerting its effects on the central nervous system and peripheral system. (B) Distribution of CB1 and CB2 in the body. CB1 is concentrated in the central and peripheral nervous systems. CB2 is more abundant in the immune system and, to a lesser degree, in the nervous system.

Abbreviations: CB1/CB2, cannabinoid receptor 1/cannabinoid receptor 2; AEA, anandamide; 2-AG, 2-arachidonooylglycerol; THC, (−)-Δ9-trans-(6aR,10aR)-tetrahydrocannabinol.

The medicinal properties of cannabis can be attributed primarily to phytocannabinoids Δ9-THC or THC and cannabidiol (CBD).40–42 THC and CBD are the most biologically active phytocannabinoids and are capable of mimicking human endocannabinoids AEA and 2-AG, respectively.40–42 Δ9-THC has been shown to bind to CB1 in the nervous system,21 and the effects of THC on the CNS and peripheral body are outlined in Figure 2 and Table 1, respectively.

The effects of cannabis on the central nervous system. Brain areas in the central nervous system (in black) and their physiological functions (in red) are listed alongside potential effects of THC and CBD (in blue and green), respectively.

Abbreviations: THC, (−)-Δ9-trans-(6aR,10aR)-tetrahydrocannabinol; CBD, cannabidiol.

In contrast, non-psychoactive CBD has high binding affinity to the CB2 receptor and exerts its effects on the immune system, resulting in its application for the treatment and management of neuropathic pain.43However, conflicting reports suggest that CBD indirectly mediates its effects by interacting with CB1 and CB2.”
OK folks back to earth.  If you would like to study this further click on the link at the bottom in references.

Legality

There are two types of marijuana from a legal standpoint:

  • Without THC aka Industrial hemp – This is a special type of marijuana plant that is bred to have minimal psychotropic compounds like THC.  It has been used for many hemp based products, such as cloth, paper, rope, hemp seed oil, etc..  The legal limit of THC in these products is .3%.
  • With THC aka marijuana – This is a plant bred to contain high percentages of cannabinoids and more specifically THC.  This will make you high and there are different sanctions in each state for possession, operating vehicles, consumption and sales.

There are four states as of this writing that ban all forms of marijuana including industrial hemp:  Idaho, Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota.  Here is a link to a great resource to check the status of legality of marijuana in different states.  Due to this gigantic gray area, there are many banks and payment processors, and even sellers, like Google and Amazon, that won’t allow the sale or promotion of marijuana based products including CBD.  So if you see any products there as of this writing, it either doesn’t contain any cannabinoids or simply haven’t been identified yet.

What is the best way to use it?

Both CBD and THC can be administered via many different methods:

  • Smoking – Fastest onset of effects, shorter duration
  • Topical – Great for localized relief – duration depends on carrier oil
  • Ingested – Capsules, gummies, honey straws, etc – slow onset, depends on digestion, longest duration
  • Tincture under the tongue – Fast onset, long duration of effects

There are other methods out there but these are the most common.

So which one is best?

Both CBD and THC have great medicinal properties.  It basically comes down to the disease you are trying to treat and if you don’t mind the psychotropic effects of THC.

In the case where either will treat the disease, I prefer CBD, because it doesn’t induce a high, it is legal in most states, and has less side effects (if any).

How Essential Oils Effect Change

Learn about how aromatic essential oils are absorbed into our bodies and the differences between essential oils and other aromatic compounds like candles, incense and wax melts.

Our store is in a mall, and as such, many people come in that are unfamiliar with essential oils.  Some have never been exposed to oils while the majority have either seen them and been scared away by the high pressure and high priced MLM sales tactics, or others know someone that uses oils and just find them overwhelming to understand.  Some people view oils as witchcraft.

Those that know me are fully aware that I absolutely can not support or much less sell something I don’t completely understand and believe in.  That is why I’m passionate about essential oils.  We live in an information age wherein there are hundreds of published studies and there is technology that breaks down the chemical components of essential oils and how they effect our bodies.  Click here if you wish to see clinical studies about essential oils.

Most essential oils have hundreds of naturally occurring chemical compounds.  When these compounds enter our body they can effect change.  There are many ways to administer essential oils such as:

Olfactory – Through sniffing

Transdermal – Through the skin

Ingestion – Eaten or Drunken

Sublingual – Placed under the tongue

Smoke Inhalation – Through your lungs

Of all of these methods of absorption, one of the most common is olfactory.   That is what this article will focus on.

Sniffing Oils

As we go on about our business we are inadvertently smelling different aromas. Most people are unaware that you are actually absorbing the contents of what you are breathing.  Although the smell may be strong, usually the concentration is so small that it doesn’t effect much change in our body.  Essential oils or volatile oils on the other hand, are extremely condensed and vaporize very quickly, which means that the highly concentrated molecules release quickly into the air.  Learn more about the concentration of essential oils here.

You Are What You breathe

When oils are nearby and you smell them you are actually ingesting the molecules and they are effecting change in your body.  It is simple chemistry.  The chemical components have obvious effects on the cells in our body in the same way that some people have allergies when certain flowers are blooming.

There are many ways to perceive the therapeutic benefits of essential oils through scent.  Popular options include:

  • Aroma Jewelry – Add a couple of drops of your favorite essential oil to the lava beads or the pads
  • Inhalation with an inhaler – Add the oil to the cotton wick and inhale when needed
  • Electric Diffuser – Great for aromatization in a home, office or car.
  • Out of the bottle – Ok in an emergency but it is best to keep your bottles sealed and use an inhaler
  • Steam inhalation – Add to hot water for steam inhalation
  • In your bath – Add to epsom salt, witch hazel, alcohol or milk, then add to warm bath

Essential OIls and Fragrance Oils

Many people mistake fragrance oils with essential oils.  Fragrance oils are man made chemical compositions and usually have no therapeutic benefit, and can even be detrimental to your health. Essential oils are all natural and they come from plants.

Ahhh Choo!

Many peoples body have an allergic reaction to these synthetic fragrances.  If you are one of those, I recommend you try essential oils which, although they smell similar, they are a completely different composition. It is a good idea to try single oils like peppermint, lavender, lemon and eucalyptus to see if they provoke any allergic reaction.  Also remember to leave an escape route for your pets so they can leave the area in case of an adverse reaction (click here for our article on essential oils and pets).  The Next time you see a diffuser with essential oils, understand that there are therapeutic benefits that are being perceived by your body.   When compared to other aromatization methods, you not only get an all natural scent but you also get all of the healing and antiseptic properties of the essential oil.

ZIA CBD – What You Must Know

Joe Zia Here, I am really excited to write to you about CBD oil. Our loyal customers know about our legendary diligence with our products and CBD oil is no exception. At ZIA we can’t offer a product that we don’t understand and believe in, so it is paramount that we have a firm understanding of where our product comes from and who are the people behind it.

Finding a Supplier

While investigating I learned that there are many offerings available and the CBD market is very unregulated. We had met with hundreds of companies that all appeared reputable and ready to sell, but when i posed my question “Can I visit your farm and see your installations” they were not as accommodating. That was until I found the folks at USAHemp. I asked them if I could come out and see their property and they resounded “Sure!”. So the next week I flew out to Oregon to visit them. I found myself a little apprehensive as I drove out to the growing site. I imagined bearded burly types with shotguns looking after their weed. Upon arrival, I noticed some postings on the trees that have a picture of a handgun and the message “This property protected by the 2nd Amendment”. I was greeted by a friendly young lady named Ana that opened the gate and escorted us to the administrative area. I asked her if it was OK to film their operation and she said “sure” so I pulled out my phone and started filming. I was happy to find an organized family run operation with staff that shared our passion for excellence. They showed us their plantation, seedlings, how they used ladybugs and praying mantis in lieu of pesticides. They spared hours of their time to explain the benefits of their different techniques. Then it became even more interesting when they showed us their Super Critical CO2 Extraction facility. The whole extraction process is outlined in this video.

We searched for six months before finding a company that was reputable enough for us to resell.  The beauty here is that the plants are cultivated and the oil is extracted at the same location. These guys are the real deal and we have their CBD products at guaranteed low prices.

Isolates and Full Spectrum

There are over 400 naturally occurring chemicals (aka cannabinoids) found in your typical cannabis plant, that include about 60 that are referred to as cannabinoids.  There are two main chemicals that are found in abundance, they are THC (TetraHydroCannabinol) and CBD (CannaBiDiol).

THC is the psycho active compound that creates the infamous marijuana high.

CBD is the therapeutic compound that has clinically proven benefits for different ailments including:

CBD isolate consists of just the CBD compound without any of the other cannabinoids.  That means it doesn’t contain any THC.  This makes it preferred by those that want the benefits of CBD and are routinely subject to drug testing.  Both isolates and full spectrum come in different formats and potencies such as:

  • Creams and lotions
  • Pure powders
  • Tinctures
  • Gummies
  • Pet treats
  • Honey Sticks
  • Vape cartridges

The full spectrum CBD contains the entire gamut of natural compounds.  It can legally contain up to .3% THC which naturally occurs in the plant.  It doesn’t appear in most testing, but can come up in some drug testing depending on amounts ingested and testing procedures.  The full spectrum CBD is less expensive and offers more benefits due to the entourage effect which refers to all of the cannabinoids working in concert to mitigate different ailments.

Your Clock is Ticking – Are you eating at the right time?

Your Circadian Rhythm Clock

Every organ in your body has its own clock and different organs work at different times throughout the day.  All of this is based on the 24 hour day, our sleeping cycle and sunlight.  There is tons of new evidence that proves the existence of this clock and shows the importance of understanding its function.

My first exposure to this concept was in Kung Fu in 1985 and was taught that the certain attacks to different organs at different times of the day could produce different results and even death.  I was explained that if you step on a nail at a certain time when the correponding organ was in full operation, it would kill you.  This also applies to impacts on the meridians that correspond to different organs (this is reflexology}.  This concept has existed for thousands of years to traditional medicine practitioners like Traditional Chinese Medicine (aka TCM).  Now there is new information that provides irrefutable proof of its existence.

There are many new evidence based diets that are moving towards intermittent fasting patterns such as diets where you fast for 16 hours and eat for 8 (aka 16/8), or diets that impose at least 12 hours of fasting before eating in the morning.  Our dinner time used to be strictly at 6pm.  Why did our forefathers call our first meal of the day break-fast which is, incidentally the same in spanish des-ayuno.

According to clinical studies and other evidence, the consumption of food after 6 pm doesn’t get properly metabolized and ends up getting stored as fat.  If you eat the same amount of food before 6 pm, it doesn’t get stored as fat.  It has proven beneficial for reducing weight and fighting diabetes.

There are several factors that influence your circadian rhythm and they are outlined in a Pubmed study which is linked at the bottom of this article.  Here is an excerpt:”Mammalian circadian rhythms are driven by a master clock, within the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) of the hypothalamus, and peripheral clocks located throughout the body []. For the circadian system to function optimally, individual clocks must be correctly synchronized to one another and to the external environment. Abnormal circadian rhythms or defects in synchronization pathways can result in circadian misalignment or desynchrony, which are associated with poor health and metabolic disorders [].  In most individuals, the SCN clock is set to solar time by photic input pathways originating in the retina []; the SCN then synchronize peripheral clocks through neuronal pathways, hormone rhythms, core body temperature, and behaviors such as the cycle of feeding and fasting [].

In short your organs have clocks and operate at different intensities throughout the day.  It is important to know when that is to ensure proper metabolism and optimum health.

Here’s to your Zensational health!

Pets and Essential Oils – Find Out Which Oils To Avoid

Here we’ll take a look at some essential oils and there effect on our beloved pets.  I’ll focus more on dogs and cats because they are the most popular.

I am not a medical professional.  This is for informational purposes only and you should always consult a professional healthcare provider before the administration of any medicine including essential oils.

There is a lot of information going around the internet warning you about the dangers of using essential oils around pets.  It’s great that there is lots of information and that is raising consciousness about their well being.  Essential oils are somewhat similar to their pharmaceutical counterparts in that they can easily be broken down into their chemical components.  As a matter of fact you can find the same chemicals in many medications.  The big advantage of essential oils is that they are all natural so they don’t include any chemical additives like the ones from big pharma.

Essential oils have quantifiable chemical constituents, so the question becomes, how do these chemicals interact with our pets metabolisms.  in the same way that each species’ digestive system is tailored to different foods, the same is true for the absorption of essential oils.  It stands to reason that some oils that are beneficial for us are detrimental to our four legged friends.  Here is a list of some of those oils:

Avoid these oils

Dogs:

  • Tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Clove
  • Wintergreen
  • Birch
  • Thyme
  • Oregano

Cats:

  • Citrus oils (lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, petitgrain)

    Really?? Again?? Ahh come on!!
  • Tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Peppermint
  • Roman chamomile
  • Cypress
  • Clove
  • Wintergreen
  • Birch
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Vetiver

There are exceptions to this.  oils such as clove and oregano can be used specifically to treat certain conditions.  This should be under a professionals advice.

Sorry about the downer with all of the amazing oils we need to be careful with.  The good news is, there are lots of oils still available for us to use and enjoy with our pets, and some even have a profound effect on them.  Whether it be behavioral or physical issues, the oils work wonders.

A cold mist diffuser is one of the best ways to deliver the therapeutic benefits to your pets.  Please keep in mind they have a more acute sense of smell and smaller portions should be used.  Also make sure your pets have an oil free area they can go to if they feel overwhelmed.  Try and be aware if they are wanting to get away from the oil or if their are any allergic reactions.

These are very general guidelines and we must remember that just as each of us are different, so are our pets.  One oil may be good for your pet but that doesn’t mean that mine will like it.

Now for the fun part, let,s go to Club Med! Did you read Club Med cause I meant Pubmed.  Pubmed is an awesome resource that contains some of the most objective information out there.  It is the US Government library of medicine, and it is the world’s largest database of published medical studies.  We have a link to it on our website here   This is a great place to learn about essential oils.  This link talks about different studies related to lavender and dogs:.https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=lavender+dogs

I have many customers that use essential oils in their daily practice of treating pets.  Here is a list of some conditions that can be treated with essential oils:

Treatable conditions for your pets

  • Allergies
  • Arthritis pain
  • Asthma and breathing issues
  • Urinary tract issues
  • Bleeding and skin lesions
  • Bacterial infection
  • Burns
  • Cancer
  • Cysts
  • Digestive disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Ear infection
  • Anxiety
  • Fever
  • Fleas and ticks
  • Fungal infection
  • Heart issues
  • Hot spots
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Mange
  • Nausea
  • Gum disease
  • Parasites
  • Parvovirus
  • Seizures
  • Sinus infections

As for other pets there is limited clinical evidence available.  I know that birds are very susceptible to oils and diffusion is not recommended near them.  I know of customers that actively use oils on horses.  Whatever your pet, you owe it to them to investigate thoroughly before any administration.

I know this all seems like a lot to take in.  Keep in mind that we unknowingly expose our pets to artificial chemical based perfumes, candles and incense without even contemplating the potentially toxic effect these are having on them.  I personally prefer natural plants which occur naturally in their habitat over chemical compositions made in a laboratory.

Creative ways to use ZIA essential oil

Hi, Joe Zia here, aka (by me and my wife) “the mad scientist”, writing to you about some of the diverse uses for essential oils.  I am not truly a scientist but I am constantly trying out new and innovative ways to leverage the power of essential oils.

Despite the fact that essential oils are powerful and concentrated liquids, the essential oil market is totally unregulated, and that is why we at ZIA feel there is a need for objective information about oils, their toxicities, their benefits and the myriad of possible uses.  Essential oils are

not at all like plants, food or even other forms of alternative medicine, in that they are extremely concentrated.  Your taste buds or your sense of smell may say its ok to ingest, but your kidneys and your liver will definitely protest, among other parts of your body!  One drop of peppermint essential oil has the same chemical constituents as 28 CUPS of tea.  Many oils also have powerful antibacterial properties that can damage your digestive flora.

Essential oils can also be harmful to your skin.  It is always a good idea to dilute before any topical application.  Essential oils work better when diluted with carrier oils.  If you accidentally do get more than a drop on your skin wash with soap immediately.  See our article about the potency of essential oils to learn more.

Any administration of essential oils should be consulted with your physician

Lemon (organic)

Lemon essential oil can do so much! From cleaning to deodorizing, lemon essential oil is more effective than most chemical products out there.  Here are some of my favorite uses:

  • Add a few drops to a towel to remove most stains from clothes, once removed I apply water to the area.
  • Use lemon essential oil to help preserve fresh fruit and vegetables. Add a few drops to a bowl of water and swirl clean fruit or veggies in it for a few seconds.
  • Lemon oil can also be used to remove gum, adhesive, crayon and permanent marker from most surfaces.  Just add a few drops to a towel and rub away the stain.  then wipe down with a water moistened towel.
  • Lemon oil and tea tree oil are powerful disinfectants. Soak your dishcloth in warm water and add a few drops of each to clean and
  • Bergamotdisinfect your counter tops naturally.  See here to prepare a ready made household cleanser.
  • Use two drops of lemon oil and tea tree oil on a cotton ball and place it in the trash can to eliminate odors.
  • Tuck a cotton ball soaked in lemon or lime essential oil behind the toilet to freshen the bathroom.
  • Add a cotton ball soaked in tea tree oil and lemon to stinky shoes.
  • Sniff from an inhaler or from the bottle to combat nausea

Lavender (organic)

Lavender is well known for its soft, delicate scent. It’s also a powerful antibacterial and bug repellant.

  • Chill without bugs. Prepare a 4 oz fine mist glass bottle with 1 tsp witch hazel,10 drops lavender and 3.5 ozs distilled water.  Spray around your house to smell great, calm everyone down and ward away some insects.  Great on your pillows.
  • Antibacterial for skin.  Use a drop on minor skin lesions, cuts or bug bites.

Peppermint (organic)

Peppermint has far more uses than spicing up your grande mocha around the holidays. This minty oil is a warning smell to pests.

  • Add two or three drops of peppermint essential oil to the cardboard inside the toilet paper, which will release a fresh scent every time it’s unrolled.
  • To prevent spiders and other pests, prepare a 4 oz fine mist glass bottle with 1 tsp witch hazel,10 drops peppermint and 3.5 ozs distilled water.  Spray in places where spiders and critters tend to enter your home.

Cinnamon Bark

Use cinnamon essential oil to eliminate odors and as an antibacterial.

  • Eliminate cooking odors by simmering a pan of purified water with a few drops of clove or cinnamon essential oils.

Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca Alternifolia)

Tea tree oil is one of the best antimicrobial oils around

  • Antimicrobial fabric softener. 3 drops of tea tree oil mixed in a cup of white vinegar in your washer will not only soften clothes, but also serve as a natural antimicrobial.
  • Antifungal lotion.  Add 2 drops to 1 tsp of your favorite lotion or carrier oil and use on feet or other areas that have fungus or bacteria.   Also works great  on acne.  Try our ZIA lavender tea tree blend in these recipes

Use your imagination

Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil(s) into your vacuum cleaner bag or home air filter.

Mix some of your favorite oils to find new scents.  Test them in a diffuser.

How Potent Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are extremely concentrated and in many cases have been proven more effective than their man made chemical counterparts.  In this article we’ll take a look at why they’re so powerful, some tips on proper administration and some other great resources to learn more.  Essential oils are powerful medicine and can even by poisonous.  Use this article for informational purposes only and always consult your doctor before any administration.

Here is a table showing the approximate ratio of plant material to extract some common essential oils.  This table is based on 1000 pounds of raw material.

As you can see it requires a lot of raw plant material to make essential oils.  That is why they should be carefully administered.

Essential oils are also known as volatile oils.  This is because the molecules are unstable and vaporize into the air quickly.

At ZIA Zensations we pride ourselves on not using carrier oils with any of our single oils or even blends.  This allows you to decide how much you want to dilute and it guarantees that your always working with pure oils as your preparing your recipes.

We highly recommend always using a carrier oil for any topical application.  The carrier oil will help to stabilize the essential oil and prolong its effects as well as being milder on your skin.  A typical dilution can range from 1% to 5% of essential oil to carrier oil.

There are many companies that sell essential oils and usually you will find plenty of marketing and sales information.  In my opinion essential oils don’t need to be sold.  There are some very reputable resources that have myriads of cold hard facts and clinical studies where you can learn for yourself which oils do what.  That is why we have links directly to the US National Library of Medicine where you can view clinical studies and research on your own.  There is an option called Clinical Studies under the Learn About Oils tab on our website, or click here.

Here is an abstract from another interesting article that proves essential oils to be more effective than antibiotics in some cases:

ABSTRACT

Biofilms are difficult to eliminate with standard antimicrobial treatments due to their high antibiotic resistance relative to free-living cells. Here, we show that selected antimicrobial essential oils can eradicate bacteria within biofilms with higher efficiency than certain important antibiotics, making them interesting candidates for the treatment of biofilms.

There are also interesting studies showing the undeniable power of essential oils as antioxidants.

Check out these about using essential oils as powerful insect repellants

On the flip side, it is equally important to be aware of some documented adverse reactions to essential oils.  Here is a website that has that:

I hope these links provide some ideas to learn about the power of essential oils.  I know it’s hard to find hard evidence based information about essential oils.  These are some great starting points.

5 Days Without The Beloved Food

Joe Zia here, manager of ZIA Zensations.

Before I proceed, please note I am not a physician and the following account is for informational purposes only and should not take the place of your physicians advice.  I nor ZIA Zensations accept any liability or responsability for misuse of the information contained herein.

I am currently conducting a five day fast that consists of only water and I thought it wise to document and share this experience with our readers.Image result for fasting

Why on earth stop eating delicious food????

Most people are well aware that the majority of sickness comes from our gut. Maintaining a healthy gut can help ward away cancer, among many other sicknesses.  I have gone through a few fasts in the past but only of about 3 days at a time.   I’ve read about people feeling better on the 4th and fifth days of a fast and I was due for a gut reset so here I am…  None of my beloved food for FIVE WHOLE DAYS!  As for my normal eating I eat just about everything from steaks to pizza and don’t forget to put cheese and bacon on all of it.  I also eat pretty healthy in the sense that I eat lots of greens and salad and almost all of our food is prepared by my lovely wife and with natural ingredients.

Humans have existed for about 5 million years and agriculture started about 12 thousand years ago, so between those 2 dates it stands to reason that more than 99% of our evolution was lived as hunter-gatherers.  In this scenario our diet was much simpler and our eating was much more sporadic.  It was common to go stints without eating.  I am a firm believer of our digestive systems being a product of the foods that were available in the areas where we evolved.  So it also stands to reason that the body was designed for taking a break from food every now and then.

Nevermind the fact that fasting has been practiced for thousands of years in recent history and is proposed by all major religions, It has also been proven that fasting induces autophagy and ketosis.  Autophagy is important because your body naturally eats up damaging cells.  Ketosis is where your body uses ketones in place of blood glucose for fuel.

Day 0 Sunday

I started the fast on Sunday July 1st at 9 pm after eating a wonderful meal at my dads house (Khorme Sabzi if you must know).  So no

special preparations here.  Some recommend to do a colon cleanse prior, I didn’t do that.

Day 1 Monday

This is where it gets ugly.  Woke up at 7:30.  No breakfast no problem.  Lots of filtered tap water throughout the day.  Normal bowel movement about 10:30 am.  Went to work as usual and come about 5 start to feel a little headache and some food cravings, no big deal.  Around 10 pm when I got home more food cravings.  Went to sleep at 1 am and slept through the night.

Day 2 Tuesday

Not a happy camper today.  Woke up at 8 am.  Felt a little weak and a some food craving, powered through.  Normal albeit small bowel moment around 10:30 am.  Prepared some “gourmet” water with 1 tsp himalayan salt in the morning.  went to work as normal.  Drank lots of water throughout the day.  Headache, brainfog and weakness persisted throughout the day.  Drank a small glass of water at 11 pm with a tsp of braggs organic mothered apple cider and a tsp of baking soda (must be added gradually or it will bubble over), not too bad with a giant water chaser.  Slept at midnight, woke up once and returned to sleep.

Day 3 Wednesday Independence Day

This one was tough.  What kind of wackjob fasts on the fourth of July? Woke up at 8 am drank water.  Drank more salt water around 9:15 am.  went to work normally.  Normal bowel movement around 11:30.  Still with headache and a little weak. Went swimming at 6:30 pm and drank lots of water.  Got home at 10 pm watched some fireworks and thought about some bbq ribs.  had my apple cider / baking soda water and went to sleep around midnight.  Woke up a couple of times and returned to sleep I couldn’t turn my mind off.

Day 4

This is where it gets interesting.  This is uncharted territory for me and this is supposed to be where you feel better.  Well, not a whole lot better.  Woke up 8 am with a slight headache and weak.  The headache was a little less than day 3.  Had my gourmet salt water at 9:15.  Work from 10am to 9:30 pm.  Very little bowel movement at 10:30 am and a few farts here and there.  Some body aches in the afternoon just below the left ribs.  Headache was very light in the evening.  Had the ACV / Baking soda cocktail at 11 pm.  Slept at midnight and woke up once then returned to sleep.

Day 5 Final day

WOW, I thought this day would never come.  Just one more day.  Woke up at 8 am, drank water, had my gourmet salt water at 9 am and off to work.  No more headache.  Still a little gas.  No bowel movements.  Lots of water throughout the day.  Still a little weak.  No food cravings.  Went home at 10 pm and dug in to a extraordinarily delicious kale, spinach, arugula, bell pepper, cucumber, salad with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and almonds on top and with a lemon, apple cider vinegar and olive oil dressing with a pinch of salt.  Slept at 1 am to permit some digestion.  Woke up a couple of times in the night.

Day 6 Ease off the fast

Got up at 8 am had some probiotic green fruit juice 4 oz. Made me two eggs in olive oil, some raw spinach, kale and arugula along with an avocado, salt and pepper, it was glorious!  Drank lots of water and left for work at 9:30 am.  I don’t eat much during the day anyway, so no food throughout the day. Powered through the day on just water.  Got home at 10 and enjoyed a delicious dinner feat consisting of Amy’s organic lentil soup with homemade bone broth, added some fried jalapeños and sunflower seed, ate with organic raw greens of spinach kale and arugula.  Light bowel movement at 11 pm.  Slept at 1 am.  Slept well with no interuptions.

Day 7 Get back to normal

Woke up at 8 am feeling good, energy levels back to normal.  Drank 16 oz of water.  Sat down on the rowing machine and did about 12 minutes at a moderate pace.  Drank 6 oz of probiotic green fruit juice.  Dug into breakfast with two eggs with bacon and fresh jalapeños, avocado, and some fresh raw greens on the side.  Had a normal bowel movement at around 10:45 am.  Proceeded to have a coffee with no sugar. showered and went to work at 11:30 am.  Going to have dinner tonight at my dad’s house so I figure I’m ready for whatever they throw at me.

Takeaway

I did this fast to cleanse my body, reset my intestinal flora, and enter into a keto state where my body burns fat instead of sugar for energy.  The idea is to keep my body in a keto state.  So very little sugar and lots of proteins, veggies, nuts and seeds.

While I was on the diet I did feel weak throughout.  There were energy improvements on day 4 and 5, but nothing like normal food induced energy.  I normally exercise every day and didn’t feel the energy to do it during the fast.  I also felt bad breath which I assume is from entering a keto state in which you commonly get acetone that comes out in your breath and urine.  I like to add a drop of peppermint to my glass water bottle.  That helped mitigate the breath situation.  You can do non physical work while fasting.  I would even venture to say the more occupied you remain the easier it is.

It is always good to abstain from everything for a week such as coffee, tea, alcohol and even food in general.  Just to ratify your independence from them.

Overall I would highly recommend fasting for many reasons:

  • Cleanse your body – Clean your intestines and enter autophagy where your body burns plaque buildup on your intestinal walls.  Starve any bacteria such as candida.
  • Enter ketostasis – Force your body to obtain energy from ketones generated by your kidneys that come from fatty acids.  This is more efficient and better for your body.
  • Lose weight – I lost 8 pounds.  It is important to maintain discipline post fast so you do gain it back.
  • Eliminate any addiction – A great opportunity to eliminate all food addictions such as sugar, coffee, tea, and alcohol.
  • Heighten awareness of your body – A perfect time to get in tune with your body and remember to eat to live rather than live to eat.
